A Request From a Distinguished Gentleman

Posted on PDX Backstage on Saturday, July 12, 2008:

    Dear producers of Pylon,

I would like FREE tickets to your show. I have a very close connection to the subject matter and I feel the performance would benefit from having me in attendance.

I came across your theater listing while I was searching the world-wide-web for information about my grandfather, the great mountaineer A. Dalegiesh. Yes, that A. Dalegiesh. As I’m sure you know he was one of the first people to assent the mountain Pylon Peak in British Columbia in 1931.

He scaled the mountain with four other brave souls, reaching the height of 2,481 meters and lived to tell the tale and father many children, an over see the fathering of many grandchildren, myself being one of them. His heroic actions have been recognized through my family and his neighborhood for the many years and I am sure your ensemble would like to be connected to his legendary journey by having a direct descendant of a man who actually climbed a Pylon in attendance to your play.

Some might argue that the Pylon Peak in Wyoming is a more impressive peak, reaching nearly 1,300 meters higher but I would disagree. Keep in mind that this was not just any mountain, but a volcano. A Canadian volcano, but a volcano none the less. While it had not erupted since the Pleistocene era, it was still an arduous journey, full of walking up steep inclines and I quote my late grandfather “Some snowy patches that were slippery…”

I look forward to seeing your show and discussing the pylon connection we share.

    Sincerely,
    Alan Dalegiesh III

I'm sure the producers of Pylon can answer for themselves, but I believe the titular pylon is, uh, a traffic cone. You know, little two-foot jobber that you can pick off with your bumper and make fly 10 to 11 feet if you clip it just right? Maybe I have the wrong pylon and there's another play opening about climbing of Pylon Peak (Canadian, not Wyominian). Two Pylons in Portland? Can it be?

Anyway, if indeed the Portland Pylon is about the traffic cones and you extend FREE tickets to Mr Dalegiesh because his grandfather scaled Pylon Peak (Candian, not Wyominian), then I insist--INSIST- -that you offer FREE tickets to members of Pylon, the legendary Athens, Georgia, rock band who were friends of R.E.M. (the band, not the sleep phenomenon).

    Regards,

    Steve

Mr. Dalegiesh has been contacted privately and been provided with free tickets to opening night.
